Codex February Updates

Welcome to the Codex newsletter. Our monthly update offers a regular look into the development of the decentralised durability engine and peer-to-peer storage protocol.
Every month, we explore key developments, updates, and insights within the Codex ecosystem.
Below are the major updates from Codex for February 2025.
Participate in the Codex Public Testnet
Codex is currently in a non-incentivised testnet phase, where anyone can run a node and help build the future of decentralised storage by trying out the protocol and sharing data on the network.
With the launch of the Codex Installer CLI application, we’ve made it easier than ever to participate in the Codex testnet. This new tool simplifies the process of running a node and joining the public testnet.
To help you get started, we have published a step-by-step tutorial that guides you through installing and running a Codex testnet node using the Codex Storage CLI. The tutorial also explains how to claim the Altruistic Mode and Active Participant roles in our Discord server.
For a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Codex CLI, Codex Developer Relations Lead Guru has written about the process of improving the testnet onboarding experience on his personal blog.
Codex v0.2.0 Released
Meanwhile, development on both the Codex client and protocol continues in earnest.
Last month, we released Codex v0.2.0 (Alpha), which introduces significant improvements, including updates to NAT configuration and the marketplace API, alongside numerous fixes and enhancements.

We have also published a live view of the current testnet metrics, which tracks data from Codex node operators who have run a node using the Codex Installer.
Codex Performance for Content Delivery
We recently published an in-depth comparison of Codex’s performance for data retrieval and distribution against that of the Deluge Bittorrent client, which signifies a baseline for modern peer-to-peer content distribution protocols.
The team employed static dissemination experiments that tested file download speeds across a fixed number of nodes on each network.
These initial comparisons found Codex to be slower at content delivery but were significantly productive. They helped identify an issue with the protocol’s performance decreasing as the network grows, which the team is actively working to resolve.
Codex is more than just a content delivery protocol. It is a decentralised durability engine that offers persistent, durable, and robust peer-to-peer data storage. However, file distribution and retrieval performance is a crucial component of the protocol’s viability, and we are working to bring this performance in line with other modern peer-to-peer content delivery systems.

AI, Qaku, and Emerging Use Cases for Decentralised Storage
In February, we explored the potential use cases for the Codex decentralised durability engine and peer-to-peer storage protocol.
Following our State of Decentralised Storage 2025 report, we looked at some exciting ways decentralised storage could help drive emerging technologies and secure the data for the next generation of the Internet.
For more, read our recent blog post on the exciting use cases for decentralised storage in 2025 and beyond.
Codex is also immediately useful for dapps that need to persist data while remaining decentralised. We recently looked at how Qaku, the Q&A app built on Waku’s p2p communications protocol, can leverage the Codex network to persist Q&A data, making it available beyond the ephemeral storage of the Waku network.Read our deep dive into how Qaku uses Codex for persistence.
This past month, we also looked at the potential for decentralised storage to empower and disrupt the rapidly growing artificial intelligence industry.
From recording tamper-proof training data with immutable provenance to creating a marketplace for AI agents, decentralised storage offers an efficiently scalable and durable data storage platform that can meet the needs of the AI applications of the future.

Codex at ETHDenver
Codex attended ETHDenver in February, and we were presented at Linea After Dark, an exclusive event hosted by Linea that took place on Friday, February 28th, at Beacon RiNo in Denver, Colorado.
Our Developer Relations Lead, Guru, and Co-Founder, Jessie, met with both new and familiar faces. They shared insights into Codex’s decentralised storage protocol and encouraged attendees to test the Codex testnet.
We also gave away a bunch of exciting merch, from Codex-branded Keycard hardware wallets and 3D Codex cubes to Exclusive POAP NFTs deployed on Linea, which guarantee access to all future Codex events, including Decentralised Data Summit 2025.

Upcoming Events
Following our attendance at ETHDenver, the Codex team looks forward to attending many more events in the coming months and connecting with like-minded people in the world of Web3 and decentralised storage.
On March 13-14, Codex’s Marina Petrichenko and Ben Bierens will both be speaking at Web3 Amsterdam, the city’s leading annual Web3 conference.
We’ll announce all our movements on our socials, so stay tuned for the latest updates on where to find us next.
