Codex May Updates

Welcome to the Codex newsletter. Our monthly update offers a regular look into the development of the decentralised durability engine and peer-to-peer storage protocol.
Every month, we explore key developments, updates, and insights within the Codex ecosystem.
Below are the major updates from Codex for May 2025.
Introducing the Codex Student Programme
We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the Codex Student Programme, a new initiative designed to bring students into the world of decentralised storage.
Open to Bachelor's, Master’s, and PhD students, the programme offers a chance to work hands-on with the Codex protocol and gain experience contributing to an open-source, censorship-resistant infrastructure.
Whether you're researching decentralised systems or curious about distributed storage networks, this is an opportunity to get involved in building the future.

Understanding the Codex Protocol
Want to understand more about how Codex works at the network level?
We’ve published a comprehensive guide that breaks down the core components of the Codex peer-to-peer network, from node discovery and data propagation to verification and retrieval.
It’s an accessible overview for anyone interested in the mechanics of peer-to-peer storage networks.

Join the Decentralised Storage Tribe
This month, the Codex X account reached 20,000 followers, an exciting milestone as we continue to ramp up our growth!
We also launched the Decentralised Storage Tribe, a community space on X for builders, researchers, and enthusiasts dedicated to censorship-resistant, peer-powered data storage. The tribe is open to all, whether you're experimenting with distributed storage, working on decentralised infrastructure, or simply exploring the principles of web3.
If you believe data should be unstoppable, storage should be censorship-resistant, and the Internet should be permissionless, join the Decentralised Storage Tribe.
Community Engagement and Events
May was a busy month for community engagement at Codex, with the team diving into various aspects of the protocol and heading out to several events.
Codex Growth Lead Marina spoke at ETHDam on the future of privacy protocols and how censorship-resistance cannot be truly realised with centralised data storage - it requires a decentralised and durable storage protocol.
Our Senior Researcher, Leo, delivered a talk on Data Availability Sampling (DAS) and sharded mempools and attended an event hosted by Web3Privacy Now during ETHPrague.
Additionally, Codex DevRel Guru hosted a live, hands-on workshop on deploying and running a Codex node in Altruistic Mode. Watch the full workshop here. Guru also attended Zuitzerland, where he shared the vision behind Codex and explored the potential for decentralised storage as a foundation of network states.
Looking ahead, Marina will be speaking at ETH Belgrade from June 3 - 5, 2025, where she will explore the Cypherpunk Paradox and how to balance privacy against nation-state power.
In May, Logos contributors also showcased Cyphershare, the decentralised file-sharing app built by Guru that uses both Codex and Waku.
Stay connected for more updates on events, workshops, and updates coming soon.
Join the Codex Testnet
Codex is currently in its non-incentivised testnet phase, open to anyone interested in running a node and contributing to the development of decentralised storage by sharing data across the network.
The Codex Installer CLI simplifies the process of setting up Codex, enabling you to install the software, launch a node, and connect to the public testnet with ease.
A comprehensive tutorial is available to walk you through the installation using the Codex Storage CLI. It also outlines how to claim the Altruistic Mode and Active Participant roles within our Discord community.
Once your node is active, we encourage you to share your feedback to help us refine the client.
You can track live statistics on the Codex network via our metrics dashboard.
