Codex April Updates

Welcome to the Codex newsletter. Our monthly update offers a regular look into the development of the decentralised durability engine and peer-to-peer storage protocol.
Every month, we explore key developments, updates, and insights within the Codex ecosystem.
Below are the major updates from Codex for April 2025.
Comparing Codex with Filecoin
Last month, we looked at the differences between Codex and Filecoin, another distributed storage network which operates on the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS).
At a protocol level, Codex differs significantly from Filecoin in its design as a Decentralised Durability Engine. It expands on the core architecture of a distributed storage network by introducing powerful durability and reliability features.
The aim behind Codex’s approach to distributed storage is to create a more durable and fault-tolerant storage system that can be rigorously verified.
For a deeper breakdown, read our blog post about how the Codex DDE compares with Filecoin.
Building an App with Codex and Waku
Codex is currently operating an unincentivised testnet comprising altruistic nodes, with plans to launch an incentivised testnet in the coming months, but developers can already begin integrating the network into their applications.
In April, Codex DevRel Guru demonstrated how to integrate both Codex and Waku (the communications component of the Logos tech stack) into a proof-of-concept file-sharing application.
As Guru explains, now is the best time to start building on and contributing to Waku and Codex. In doing so, you have the opportunity to help build the tech that will realise the original core values of web3 and create censorship-resistant, decentralised applications.
Read Guru’s full walkthrough for building a file-sharing app using Codex and Waku.
Community Engagements
Guru also collaborated with DappLearning this past month, offering viewers a deep dive into the Codex protocol and the problems with centralised storage that it is designed to solve.
His session broke down the basics of how data is allocated and persisted on a decentralised storage network, as well as the novel durability features of the Codex Decentralised Durability Engine.

Other community engagements in April included Codex Solutions Engineer Ben appearing on an X Spaces to explore the potential applications of the Codex network and its ability to unseat cloud data storage monopolies with a p2p, censorship-resistant alternative.
Codex Senior Research Leo also attended Paris Blockchain Week 2025, where we connected with like-minded peers and discussed emerging use cases for decentralised storage and other web3 technologies.
Team Meetup and Upcoming Events
The Codex team also met up with other IFT projects in Split, Croatia, which provided not only the chance to connect team members in person, but also the ability to workshop ideas with team members from Nomos and Waku–the other components of the Logos tech stack delivering privacy-preserving governance for network states and p2p, censorship-resistant communications, respectively.
During the event, Dmitry shared the latest updates on Codex’s roadmap, including plans for the introduction of an incentivised testnet.

Following this meetup, the Codex team also hosted an offsite in Trogir, Croatia, where we enjoyed the benefits of collaborating on development and strategy in a physical space.

Looking ahead, Codex Growth Lead Marina will speak at ETHDam in Amsterdam on May 10, 2025, covering the future of privacy informed by the capabilities of censorship-resistant, privacy-preserving technologies.
She will also be speaking at ETH Belgrade 2025, which will take place from June 3 - 5, 2025. She will be exploring the Cypherpunk Paradox and how to balance privacy against nation-state power and the advent of decentralised digital nations.
Following our team meetup in Croatia, we are looking forward to attending many more events in the coming months. Stay tuned to our socials for the latest updates on where we will be heading next.
Join the Codex Testnet
Codex is in a non-incentivised testnet phase, open to anyone who wants to run a node and support the future of decentralised storage by sharing data on the network.
The Codex Installer CLI application makes it easier than ever to install Codex, run a node, and join the public testnet.
A step-by-step tutorial is available to guide you through the setup with the Codex Storage CLI and explain how to claim the Altruistic Mode and Active Participant roles in our Discord.
Once your node is up and running, share your feedback to help us improve the client.
The Codex network currently has more than 700 participants, with around 137 people already having claimed the Altruistic Mode role! Follow live statistics on the Codex network on our metrics dashboard.
