Codex October Updates
The Codex newsletter offers a regular look into the development of the decentralised durability engine and peer-to-peer storage protocol.
Every month, we explore key developments, updates, and insights within the Codex ecosystem.
Below are the major updates from Codex for September 2024.
Codex Testnet Builds Momentum
The Codex testnet was recently launched to the public, and we have already welcomed many early adopters to the network. Anyone can download the Codex Testnet Starter and join the ranks of other early adopters, building the future of censorship-resistant data.
Codex is a Decentralised Durability Engine (DDE) designed to offer a robust and censorship-resistant alternative to centralised storage platforms. Through its design as a peer-to-peer storage network protocol, Codex aims to create a world where important data is resistant to censorship, hacks, and outages.
For more information on Codex, read the whitepaper.
With the public testnet deployment, Codex remains in an Alpha state. Several features of the protocol design are under active development and prioritised according to the project’s updated roadmap. Users should expect to encounter bugs and issues, which they are encouraged to report on the Codex Discord.
The Codex Discord is also the best place to get started as a participant in the public testnet. After you have downloaded the Codex Testnet Starter, head to the #join-testnet channel to begin the interactive onboarding process, which will guide you through the various steps involved in setting up your Codex node.
To learn more about setting up your Codex testnet node, read the quickstart guide in the Codex documentation.
Why Ethereum Needs Decentralised Storage
One of the primary applications of the Codex Decentralised Durability Engine is its ability to store archival data, which may not need to be referenced often but should be resistant to manipulation or centralised points of failure.
In October, we published a blog post outlining the need for decentralised storage to accommodate the scaling roadmap for the Ethereum network. If decentralised storage is not available, the custody of archival blockchain data may rest with a few centralised parties, increasing the risk of data loss or censorship. Read more about how Codex enables a durable archive for Ethereum.
Upcoming Events
The Codex team is preparing for an action-packed week at Devcon in Bangkok, Thailand, where we will host the Decentralised Data Summit.
The event will focus on the transformative potential of decentralised storage and offer engaging panel discussions, interactive workshops, networking opportunities, and more. There will be opportunities for attendees to receive limited-edition swag, engage with some of the top thought leaders in the space, and enjoy an evening of dance with a live DJ at the Neon After Party.
There is also an opportunity to win a free Raspberry Pi 5 for those who come to the Codex booth after running our testnet!
For more information, read our tweet about the content. The important thing is to come to the booth as soon as you arrive. Please make sure to arrive early to ensure your access. We will let people in on a "first come, first serve" basis. If you want to participate in this Testnet Challenge, we recommend you run the testnet before the event, so all you need to do is show us. If you want to do it at the event, no worries; you can do that too. Our team is always happy to help ( on Discord or IRL at the event ). You can join the testnet here.
Sign up for the Decentralised Data Summit 2024.
The Codex team will also be presenting on the 11th at 4:00 p.m. at Parallel Society Congress in Bangkok, a Logos-hosted event that offers a multi-purpose platform and meeting ground for a range of projects that position the ideas behind new forms of governance. The team will also host a demo on the 11th at 12:20 pm at the Ethereum Cypherpunk Congress hosted by Web3PrivacyNow. Sign up here. Finally, Codex will have a major presence at Devcon itself, with keynote speeches on the 13th at 10:50 a.m. on blob storage and PeerDAS on the 14th at 4:10 p.m. during the event, alongside another keynote appearance on the 12th at 1:30 p.m. at libp2p Day.
